LINDA G. GOSSETT

The ceramic pieces Linda is currently making are a direct response to her move to west Texas from Dallas.
The calmness of these days has become fruitful as she sees the work reflecting her new environment. She has looked outward at the scratchy, dry, and rusty landscape and found provocative detail and beauty. Linda is compelled to emulate this through distillation/translation into her art. Previous work erased human touch as part of the process.
This work reflects her need to assert “hand made”, through mark making and low relief carving. The surfaces of these sculptural vessels are deliberately activated as she accentuates the scratches, gouges, and textures in the clay.
By flooding the vessel with black slip, wiping it off, and then layering it with veils  of color, the natural light of her surroundings emerges. These pieces portray Linda’s shift from the frenetic life she has led to a quiet observation of breath.
